Moving Forward

I have spent the last couple of days rejoicing in our Lord and giving thanks for the privilege of participating in the work of his church and kingdom. I have wept tears of joy as I’ve recounted what he has done, and I have wept tears of sadness as I’ve recounted what these churches have endured. To share in our Lord’s joys and sorrows is a privilege as he leads us to endure all things for the sake of his name among the elect.

He has us moving on whether we were ready or not. This is what it means to follow our Lord in the day and the way of his pleasure. When we were in the dark we dressed ourselves and went where we wanted to go. But when God set his love upon us and saved us, he dresses us in the robes of Christ’s righteousness, gives us his Spirit and his word, and delights now to lead us in union with himself where he’s going. To have the heart of Jesus is to say and move with the words, ‘Not my will, but your will be done.’ It is a good thing when he is creating us in Christ Jesus with minds, affections and wills that bend to his providence and his prescribed will. Thank you for moving with him and allowing me the privilege of being a part of that with you.

As we move forward together with our Lord I wanted to let you into the thinking process of the leadership of the church. I am sure that you all are thinking, “What do we do next?”

I want to encourage you first of all to seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and pray. Trust in the Lord who reigns over us, and who is at hand caring for all our needs, taking every matter of concern before him with thanksgiving, because he can help us. And draw near to God individually and corporately, worshiping him and delighting in his daily will. We ought always to pray and not give up. Pray for gospel renewal in our church, the cares and needs of the body, the officers of our church as they lead and serve, and for the sale of the 1824 Barnwell Street property. We ought always love God and our neighbor. This part of our process is never changing.

Second, be ready to participate in moving forward. Each one of you has been given gifts and abilities in Christ that are to be employed by the Spirit in the work of his church. We will worship together at Christ Church on Sunday July 8th at 10:30 am and then eat together following the service. Participate by coming early to church at 10:00 am so that you can be there to welcome your new church family from Covenant Presbyterian Church. We will stand outside the doors and into the foyer welcoming them as they arrive on that Sunday morning. We will pray together on Thursday July 12th at 6:00 pm at Christ Church. Come and lift your hearts to the Lord together with your church family as we seek the Lord in prayer for his glory in this new work that he is doing among us. Finally, be ready to participate in various teams / committees / groups that will help us move forward out of our facility into the facility at 3100 Covenant Road in the coming months. After July 12th the leadership will be calling on you to use your gifts, talents and abilities to join with others to help us make this important transition over the next several months.

I am excited to be a part of the work that God is doing amongst us as his church in Columbia. The leadership of the church is calling upon you to be involved - praying, growing, and giving of yourselves, your time, your resources to the work of our Lord’s church. He has bought his church by his precious blood and now he calls us into his generosity that his grace may be shared among us and through us to others here in Columbia and beyond. Let us continue on in worshiping, living, and doing ministry together for his glory.

For His Glory,

Pastor Jim
