Reflections

“When a willing victim who had committed no treachery was killed in a traitor’s stead, the Table would crack and Death itself would start working backward.” - C.S.Lewis, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

“The way of the disciple (follower of Jesus) is different from the way of the world. In the kingdom of God, true greatness is measured by our service, not by the number of our servants. It is seen, not in how high up the ladder we have climbed, but how far down the ladder we are prepared to climb for the sake of others. True discipleship has at its heart letting go of our desire for honor in this world, in order to bestow honor on others.” - Sinclair Ferguson, Let’s Study Mark

PRAISE

Hymn of Praise  No. 261 What Wondrous Love Is This

*Call to Worship  Psalm 62

Leader: For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation.

All: He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.

Leader: For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence, for my hope is from him.

All: He only is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be shaken. On God rests my salvation and my glory; my mighty rock, my refuge is God.

Leader: Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him;

All: It is in you, Almighty God, we trust!  To you Almighty God, we pour out our hearts!

RENEWAL

Prayer of Confession

Leader: Let us come to the Lord in his majesty and mercy, confessing our sins, trusting in his grace for forgiveness and his new life in us.

All: O Lord, you are our Father, and we are but earth and mire; You are our Creator, and we are the work of your hands;You are our Shepherd, and we are your flock; You are our Redeemer, and we are the people you have bought back; You are our God, and we are your inheritance. Therefore, do not be angry against us, to correct us in your wrath. Do not recall our sin, to punish it, But chastise us gently in your kindness. Be mindful that your name is upon us, That we bear your mark and badge. Undertake the work you have already begun in us by your grace, That the whole earth may recognize that you are our God and Savior. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Silent Confession of Sin

Assurance of Pardon

Leader: If you are trusting in Christ alone for the forgiveness of sins and acceptance with God, hear these words of his pardoning grace: Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned--every one--to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. - Isaiah 53:4-6
